Knowing the SignsThe symptoms of HIV or AIDS will vary depending on the phase the infection is in. Unfortunately, the first few weeks after infection is the most quiet time for the illness. Most patients report no symptoms at all during this time. The only way to know if you have the condition is to be tested by your doctor for it. After this initial phase, the symptoms are slightly more noticeable but are still easy to overlook.Some of the symptoms you may have at first will remind you of having the flu or a bad cold. Two to four weeks after being infected, the body will fight against the illness like it does any other condition, which is why you may feel sick. During this time, you may have symptoms such as a headache, fever, a rash on any area of the body, swollen lymph glands and a sore throat. It's important to note that you don't have to have these symptoms; not having them is not a sign that you don't have the illness. Once the AIDS virus goes through this initial battle, it may hide in your body for years without showing any other symptoms. For some people, being symptom free for eight or more years is possible. During that time, the virus is still multiplying and quietly destroying most of your immune symptom in the process. For some people, a mild infection may present itself, but it may take longer for it to heal. The illness will resurface and during that time you'll exhibit symptoms that are much like the flu or an infection. This includes swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, diarrhea, fevers and a cough.
